"Storm at Batoche"

Meaning behind Gallete and Banock:
In the book Louis and James talk about making "Banock" or "Gallete".  Louis calls it "Gallete" and James calls it "Banock".  The meaning behind this might be, even though you might have a different name or though about something, if youre friends it shouldn't matter.

How i knew it was "Louis Riel"

The man in the book taht took James home was Louis Riel because he was Metis.  Another reason was because he wouldn't tell James his last name (Riel).  The announcement to the town came on after Louis left James.  Some other reasons it was Louis Riel:
  • He knew how to make Gallete (metis favorite)
  • He was in hiding and would not go into town

  • There are pictures of machines cutting down all the trees

  • Text says that there is no more rich soil
Prior Knowledge:
  • Pictures have many transportation devices and these devices can get you to different places.
  • When you take down the trees you wreck the environment
  • If there is no rich soil that obviously means that the earth is getting destroyed.
Inference:

  2. Rabbits are Europeans in the book

The Polar Express:

Clues:
  • Polar express is a train
Prior Knowledge:
  • North Pole
  • Santa

The Wretched Stone:

  • Crew members are hypnotized by the rock
  • Crew members are lazy
  • Crew members turn back into humans
Prior Knowledge:

Inferring is something we use everyday to get the deeper meaning of things.  To get an inference form a book  you have to have prior knowledge and clues from pictures or text.  You then Take the clues and your prior knowledge and make an inference.  It is an easy way to realize what the author is trying to tell you.  For example look at the pictures and text to find clues then use your prior knowledge and make an inference on what the comic is trying to say.

I'm sure it all balance out come spring
Clues: Snowball left a trail behind him
Snowball is saying that he is gaining more weight

Prior Knowledge: When a snowball rolls it collects snow making it bigger

Inference: Snowball  is saying he is gaining weight by running (rolling ) but when a snowball rolls on snow it gets bigger.
Clues + Prior Knowledge = Inference

INFERENCE
Everyone sees life in a different way.  The kids dont see liking each other as a bad thing, like Charles mom does.  Charles sees his life as bad even though he is fortunate and Smudge sees her life as amazing even though she is very unfortunate  Smudges dad sees his life as unfortunate because he needs to support Smudge but does not have a job.  Charles mom sees her life very fortunate but sees less fortunate people not equal to them.  The dogs from the separate families brought Smudge and Charles together and showed them that it is OK to like each other and be different.
